Basically, the author uses this article to rationalize their own fear of driving. Literally the saddest thing I’ve ever read...

walking/cycling is good, and would be way better in cities. Not sure about horses, I feel like less horse poop around would be good.

There are some interesting tidbits in there and he does raise some valid arguments. The thing that sticks with me though is this supposed wannabe new driver was 18 when he got his first taste behind the wheel... I know for me I had operated a car on a road by 14 or 15, when one of my older female friends asked if one of us in the group wanted to drive. She didn’t feel like it and I jumped at the chance. I had had my parking lot lessons from my father a few times before that, so I was confident behind the wheel that night. I just figured driving was an innate ability, but sounds like when you are raised by a father who is afraid to drive over certain bridges, that that fear gets handed down.
That’s the aspect the author doesn’t get or get into, is that emotional desire to jump behind the wheel and just drive. Sounds like California is better off without him behind the wheel. But his article isn’t total BS, there are lots of good points, but it is sad to think that there are folks out there like this. But so be it, different strokes and all. If we were all the same, it’d be pretty boring.

I don’t take that away from it as much as it’s for us to not fear the coming autonomous autos. For most people it will be just fine and suit them perfectly. For us enthusiasts, we will be relegated to playing at tracks and dedicated other places, similar to horses nowadays.

Before cars, it was a Big Deal to travel anywhere more than a couple miles from home. Food, furniture, machinery/tools, and structures were all acquired and built/grown locally for most people without deep pockets.
Before 1910, most individuals in the United States were born, lived their lives, and died without ever venturing more than 50 miles from the same spot.
So yes, cars are worth their society burden.

Counterpoint: cars should 100% be completely banned from entering cities. They are a plague on the urban fabric, and the safety and well-being of city dwellers. Beyond cities they have an undeniable utility, but within them they have no purpose.

I see your city car-ban, and raise you one non-city bicycle ban. That seems fair. Nothing like getting stuck behind a pack of 10-speed jackwads doing 22mph in a 40mph traffic lane who want to be treated as legitimate road users while completely ignoring stop signs, traffic signals and rights-of-way...
